Q: What is expected of a mentor?
A: Mentors are expected to make an introductory post on this blog, complete their profiles and respond to any comments left for them on the blog. Additionally, they are expected to attend the three meetings in March. Mentors may also want to have other meetings (coffee, lunch, job shadowing) or correspondence with proteges. That is totally up to them.
Q: What is expected of proteges/students?
A: Proteges are expected to read through the blogs and profiles to familiarize themselves with the mentors. They are also expected to attend all three meetings in March.
Q: Why do we need a mentoring program for women?
A: Unfortunately, a lot of college women have very limited positive, professional female role models in their lives. We hope that this program will put more of those role models in their lives and in their network. After all, if they can't see it, they can't be it. We are hosting this program in March because it is Women's History Month.
Q: What is the purpose of this blog?
A: The blog will allow the college women an opportunity to become acquainted with mentors and an informal space in which they can ask questions and become acquainted with the mentors.
Q: I heard that there will be speed mentoring during our meetings. What is that?
A: If you've heard of speed dating--dozens of people looking for the right match, cycling through timed conversations to quickly sort out prospective future romantic interests from potential romantic "duds"--you're on the right track. Now think rather than meeting a potential future spouse, you are meeting future potential mentors and proteges, allies and sources of information to help you make the most of your career. Speed Mentoring is not mentoring. It is more a way for people to meet potential mentors to see if there is a fit for a longer term engagement.
Q: I am a mentor. Where should I park when I come to campus?
A: The best place to park is the parking lot immediately south of the University Center. There is marked visitor parking there.
Q: What should mentors bring to the first meeting?
A: It is suggested you bring business cards. Additionally, you are asked to decorate your table at the first meeting. The decorations need to be a reflection of you and your personality. It could include items you collect, photos, and/or a centerpiece.
Q: How should I dress for the mentor events?
A: Mentors should dress how they dress for work or a business meeting. Proteges/students should dress in business casual.
